Barrington Delon Guthrie was a
beloved father, son, brother, cousin,
uncle, grandfather and friend. He was
born to Ethel Maud Sewell-Guthrie
and Bertram Guthrie on January 17,
1954, in their home in Perth Town,
Trelawny, Jamaica. Dell, as he was
affectionately called by his family,
was the third of eight children. He is
survived by siblings, Audrey, Terry,
Locksley, Cherryl, Sandra, Andrea,
and Roderick; his four children,
Everett, Shomari, Barrington Jr., and
Malaika; eleven grandchildren; and
significant other, Bridget Newman.
Barry attended William Knibb Memorial High School in Trelawny and
was a member of both the cricket and track and field teams. His love and
passion for sports continued until his passing. He was always willing to
challenge his sons, grandson, L’amour, nephews, and anyone to a game
of basketball. He once famously said he could make 10 free throws in a
row blindfolded, a bold claim that we were never able to verify.
Barry was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Sunrise,
where he was later named president and continued to serve in various
capacities, until his passing on the afternoon of Thursday, March 26,
2020. He was so committed to his service that he made it his mission to
donate to the Kiwanis Club scholarship fund to one or two high school
students every year for a number of years. He was also passionate about
donating to cancer survivors, or others fighting the disease directly or
indirectly, by helping to raise monies for causes that were close to home
for him, such as Relay for Life, where he always wanted to raise the most
Barry was a fighter, a survivor, a leader, a believer, an eternal optimist,
and a tower of strength for those blessed to be in presence. He always
had a sense of calm and poise to him no matter the circumstance. He
lived a life of service to his South Florida community and those around
him and was always willing to give some of whatever he had to others.
He was an astute businessman and entrepreneur for over 25 years and
ran a successful public adjusting practice for over 16 years. He was
an avid basketball and sports fan, politics aficionado, fisherman, and
gardener. One of the things he was most passionate about, aside from
his family, was his love for gardening, which he got from his mother. Up
until the time of his passing, he made sure that his plants were watered
and cared for.
To our loving father, brother, cousin, friend,
significant other and grandfather Barrington,
we love you, and may your soul Rest In Peace.
