Obituary

August 12, 1943 - October 27, 2020

This is the story of Ramón Elias Restrepo; “Papi” to his children, and “Tío Ramon” to almost everyone else that knew him. Thought of as the life of the party, Ramón Elias was greatly loved. He will be missed, and he will always be cherished.

In Belalcázar, Colombia on August 12, 1943, Ramón Elias Restrepo was born the twelfth child to Don Jesus and Doña Leonor Restrepo. For about 20 years, he lived with his family and made many friends in this small country town. He shared stories of how he started a Boy Scout Troupe and opened a bike shop in town as a teenager. He proudly spoke of when he was an altar boy and he helped the church collect funds to build El Cristo Rey, a 45.5 meters tall statue of Christ Jesus that stands today as the pride and joy of this small town.

At a young age, Ramón Elias chose to spread his wings, leave his country and move to New Jersey. He arrived with less than a dime in his pocket. He learned English, worked in textiles, and loved carpentry. He became known as a Jack-of-all-trades. Whenever asked: “Where did you learn to do that?”, his answer was “the University of Life!” He loved working with his hands and was always willing to help a friend or a family member with a home improvement project.

In 1978, Ramón Elias and his family moved to Miami, Florida. He was well known for his cooking among family and friends; most especially for his “Sancochito.” He explained very proudly how it was different from Sancocho because his version was done “slowly and without laziness, since all ingredients were cut in small pieces with love.”

Friends and family will remember his quick wit, his love for gathering around the kitchen (especially after a weekend home project), and his pride for his home country, Colombia. Ramón Elias Restrepo leaves behind two life-long beliefs: “Dream big, because it does not cost anything,” and “Never look back, not even to gain momentum.”
