Ruth Joyce Grant, nee Carr, was born to
Amy Meleta Khan and Otto Lorenzo
Carr on July 12, 1937. She transitioned
from this life to the next on June 1,
2020. She has reunited with her beloved
husband of 62 years who went ahead a
year ago to prepare the way.

She leaves behind her four sons, Desmond Grant,
Herman Grant, Omar Grant, and Paul Grant, and daughter,

She also leaves behind her brothers,
Norman, Bertram and Calvin, and
sisters, Sybil and Grace, and she was
predeceased by her sister, Yvonne. She will be dearly missed by
those mentioned above, as well as her 11 grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and
friends. Ruth Grant was lovingly known as Moms, Mums,
Mumsie, Tiny, Aunty Tiny and Grandma to her family and

Ruth was born in Kingston, Jamaica, where she met and married
the love of her life at the age of 19. Prior to marriage, she assisted
her seamstress mother and worked in a factory. Once they
started their family, her days and nights were consumed with
taking care of her family. She was a wonderful mother to her
four boys and a surrogate mother for many. She always said,
“If you can’t love other people’s kids, yours won’t prosper.” She
was a great cook, providing three hot meals for her family every
day. Her dishes were made with love, and her fish tea and stew
peas could win any chef challenge. Even picking the food was a
careful process. Any young women in her care were invited to
go with her to Carnation Market, where they learned from her
as she greeted her favorite vendors, meticulously examined (and
critiqued) the produce, and bartered the prices.

Mums was a loving, caring person with a good, pure spirit. She
was always there when you needed her and ready to help or give
parental advice. She loved her boys fiercely but never hesitated
to check them when they stepped out of line! She was a godly
woman and quickly found North Miami Avenue Church of God
when she moved to Miami. She was known to speak the truth,
letting the chips fall where they may. We will miss her joyful,
infectious laughter and warm, emotional greetings and goodbyes.
